Fancy Words and I'm No Cara Carroll

In the Language Standard of the Common Core (specifically the vocabulary and acquisition use), our students should be expanding their vocabulary!
So, last year I decided to use Fancy Words to introduce synonyms and the use of fancy vocabulary words.  My students this year just loved it so much!  They've been using their fancy words SO much lately. I'm almost sick of hearing the words humungous, spectacular, fantastic, and superb.  :)  Almost.

Of course, we start off reading Fancy Nancy to introduce Fancy Words (and we continue reading different Fancy Nancy books all week). Here are some fun things we did all week to work on our vocabulary acquisition (that's a fancy word for learning big words). P.S. that is a STEAL of a deal on a Fancy Nancy big book!

Believe me... I'm no CARA CARROLL (have you seen this girl's anchor charts? To die for!). I cannot make a cute anchor chart to save.my.life.  Cara, can you give me some lessons????

After the book, we did a little craftivity.  We took the words that we learned and made wands with them (of course I called them wizard wands for the boys and princess wands for the boys).  They wrote their favorite fancy word on the star and drew a picture of the meaning of the word.

This is our Fancy Word Wall (also included in the packet).  My students came up with *most* of those fancy words up there!

To make sure my students are applying what they've learned, I challenge them to use fancy words in their journals. And when they come up to conference with me after journal, if I see any fancy words used correctly, they get to circle them with MY "magic marker". SO precious!!!

Check out my Fancy Word Activities pack {here}! On sale for 2 days only!

I will pick 3 random comments to win this packet! Tell me your favorite fancy word and leave your email address.

I love using the word predicament.  ;)

My favorite fancy word is a synonym for a disease of the lungs caused by a volcano. It is also one of the longest words in the dictionary. It is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. After talking about syllabication I show this word to the kids and how easy it is to read it if you take it apart. LOL!

What a great lesson! I am always trying to get the children to use more interesting words in their writing and I love your ideas!

I call the boring words "pesky" words. My favorite fancy word is "persnickity." It comes from the story "The Seven Silly Eaters". It means picky. I tell my students that I am being very persnickity on an assignment and they know that they won't get away with anything but their best work. :)

Thanks for sharing!

I love the whole Fancy Nancy series and the illustrator lives in Newport Beach nearby. Yup, you can touch me cause she is always speaking or reading one of these books to kids who live locally. This packet looks fantastic. One thing we have done is created "growing charts" where we continue to add to our list as we go through the year. I use these books to talk about academic vocabulary and Tier 2 and 3 words! You are sooooo common core. These activities are adorable and you are just the BEST!
