Parent Teacher Conferences

How many of you have conferences coming up? I DO! I have them next week.  I actually LOVE having conferences. I can talk anyones ear off!  I just don't love doing grades and grading papers. If I could just conference with each parent/child and that's it, I would be happy as a clam.

Ok, well I have had some bad experiences. I had a parent cry once and I had no idea what to do. I just told her that her son was slightly below grade level in reading and she has a come-apart. I seriously was speechless. I'm never speechless. I just grabbed her hand and said WE CAN DO THIS.
Who knows?! Maybe when my hubby and I have kids, I'll be the one crying at the conferences!!!!!!!

I just wanted to send some ideas your way to get ready for conferences.

Here is a reminder note I send home.

Here is a folder we make for conferences {I'm not lyin' ____'s been tryin'!}. We can put some examples of our work in it to show our parents at conferences.
They just color the picture, add their name, then glue onto a folder piece of construction paper. I love the saying! My first grade team gave me the idea!

Here is a personal report card I posted last spring. I do it for both conferences. It's a fun "self assessment" on how each kiddo feels about school and I put it in their conference folder.  Yet another idea from my wonderful team.

We start conferences next week, too. I was just sitting down to make up a reminder note for next week and saw your blog. One thing off of my to do list!! I can talk anyone's leg off too. I share their data binders and journals during the conferences. This way I have nothing to prepare for conferences except grabbing their stuff off of the shelves!!

What a great idea! Thank you! I've seen a personal report card for older students, but never one appropriate for K-1. I can't wait to share your great idea (and awesome blog-again!) with my team!

Thank you! I love all three! I also love it when teachers share so freely with each other! I am going to share them with my K team!

Thank you for sharing. I have just downloaded the personal report card and plan to use it in initial conference with kids who are experiencing learning difficulties - it makes a great, non-confrontational starting point.

I love your personal report card. I used it last year and the parents really respond to it. Most of the kids are really honest too. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing. I have conferences next week. These are some great ideas. I've had parents cry on me as well or tell me way too many personal things. I think I'm one of those people. I have complete strangers tell me all the details of their lives.

Thanks for the printables!

I used your personal report card at student-led spring conferences last year. I teach kindergarten and my fellow staff members thought I had gone temporarily insane (our school doesn't do spring conferences)! Well, I can't wait to do these conferences again! The report card was a big hit!

What great ideas!! I JUST got my kindergarten classroom last week (there were too many kids in the other 3 classes so mid October they decided to make a 4th section) and these give me a great jumping off point to begin my conferences!! Thanks!
