MLK and Civil Rights {Upper Grades}

Hey everyone!! Guess what... it's me... Natalie. Do you even remember who I am?

If not, here's a refresher:
I am Rachelle's blog partner
I've been writing for What the Teacher Wants for over two years now.
I teach 5th grade.
I love American History.
I have an 8 month old baby.
And a two year old.

You may have noticed that I've been missing around here lately. Those two little kiddos keep.me.busy.
all.the.time.

I am pretty pleased to announce that I have finished a new unit just in time for the upcoming holiday, Martin Luther King Day!!

Want to read about what this pack includes??

And here's a pretty snapshot of some of the awesome printables and graphic organizers you will receive. 30 pages total.

This unit is perfect for any upper grades classroom {designed for grades 3-6} and will be a fun way to do some great learning about an important time in American History.

Want to win this pack??

I'm having surgery around MLK, Jr. Day and this could be good for a sub! Also, when I looked on TpT, the suggested grades were third, fourth, and sixth. I'm assuming that you also meant to click fifth :)

This would be perfect for my 5th graders. Usually anything I can find for them on MLK, JR. is either too easy or too young.

I would love to win this packet as I do teach a multi-age classroom and we not only talk about MLK, but also the Civil Right Movement. What a perfect addition. :)

I've been looking for some MLK activities for my 3rd graders. Over half my class is high ability. I feel this would challenge them but also be adaptable for the rest of my group as well. Plus I love teaching MLK/Black History. My students are mostly African American so they always seem to be interested in this subject matter.

Black History Month is a really big deal at our school. We have a huge program and daily Q's of the day. Last year, I didn't do so great with Black History Month due to our State Testing Changes. This year...I'm going to do a huge unit about civil rights. I can't wait! If I don't win...I'll buy it for sure!!

This looks fabulous Natalie! Welcome back and remember, you will NEVER look back and say "I should have created more units instead of spending time with my kids!"
Enjoy every precious second because soon those babies will be off to jr. high... (sigh and sniffle)

Happy New Year!

Hi Natalie, I live in a small town and most of our students and families are not exposed to much diversity. I moved here from Los Angeles and am trying to teach my students about the vast cultures that make up our wonderful country. Your unit will help me with my journey. Thank you for all of your units and ideas. I am a huge fan of your blog and your TpT store. Happy New Year, Sylvia. Sraigosa505@aol.com.

MLK Jr is my hero...I get pretty passionate when I teach at him and the civil rights movement. Third grade is about the time to discuss some of the hardships African American suffered adn how lucky we ALL are to have heros like MLK Jr!!

I have eagerly been waiting for you to post this ever since Rachelle said you were working on one! For my class I would use it for a unit in February, we are working on making connections and it would be great to relate to some of the ideas that have already come up, inequality, poverty etc. I would start the unit after reading Martin's Big Words, one of my fave books!

I was moved to 5th grade this year after teaching 2nd and 3rd for a zillion years. I scramble every day to plan and create. This would be a God send.

Like the previous post says, I too moved to 5th grade after teaching kindergarten last year and having a baby. I now have a 1 year old, teach 5th, and am always logging super late hours trying to prepare for the next day. Your unit looks cute and rigorous! It would be extremely helpful and beneficial. :))))

I would love to use this for my 4th graders! It's so hard to fit all my SS into 30 minutes a day. (Which is also used for Science and Health!)

Sara said...

WOW. What an amazing pack! I'd love it because it's great for schools that don't set aside time for SS, but rather just ELA and math! :) Thanks for the chance!

I would love to use this with my fifth graders. I talk a lot about how to handle bullying without bullying back... and I use MLK as an example of someone who didn't react with violence and anger. Thanks!

Since we are in the middle of a big informational text unit, this would make my lesson planning soooo much quicker & easier! Also, this is my first year teaching fourth grade after 11 years at the middle school level-- so I am an "old dog " who loves to find new tricks!!!! Thanks for offering the giveaway! I think this is a must have even if I don't win!

Your packets are always perfect Natalie! I would love this one in particular because we are launching a nonfiction unit in both Reader's and Writer's Workshop and this would tie in so nicely. :)

Emily said...

#1 reason: I am constantly striving, like every other teacher here, to create lessons that motivate my students to want to learn more and more--this packet looks like it fits the mold in this regard! #2 reason: I also have a (my first) young one at home (9 mo.), and have really been struggling with the work/home balancing act. This packet would be a wonderful addition to my sorely lacking lesson plans of late!
